Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial

On Friday, May 27th, we were able to tour the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. As soon as we approached the gate, there was a feeling that could not be replicated anywhere else. To be walking on the same path where so many innocent lives were taken was intense. We went through the bunkers, barracks, and crematorium, and it was awful the way the prisoners were treated! I will not forget what our tour guide said about the roll coll area. Out of all the horrible conditions the prisoners were in, the roll call area was said to be the worst because they were forced to stand completely still and say nothing. They could not help their neighbors or use the bathroom. To be degraded so low like that must have been difficult! This experience will truly be one that stands out in my trip to Europe.

  1. I too felt that uncomfortable feeling when walking around the camp knowing that over 41 thousand people died there was unreal. I couldn't image what was going through the prisoners minds during roll call and forcing yourself to look well enough to work so you were not immediately killed

  2. I was also surprised that roll call was the worst part about the camp because as seen on TV it seems so simple and such a small part of their life. But as the tour guide was discerning, it was awful. The part that I thought was the worst is that you could not help any of your friends or neighbors if the fell down. It was an unforgettable experience that physically showed what it was like to be in a concentration camp.

  3. I couldn't imagine standing outside in that big open area during drastic temperatures. It was pretty hot & the sun was beating down on us when we were there & we were only standing there for a few moments, not for hours at a time. It was unbelievable what they had to go through even just with a simple task of roll call.
