The national maritime museum was my favorite site so far. This was due to how the history of shipping playing a major role in the Dutch past and how it directly relates to the advancement of the Dutch. I really enjoyed learning about how the Dutch East India trading company played a role in this. The vast fleet carried all sorts of cargo from spices to slaves. The ships on average would have crews of 300 although only around 30 people were needed to crew a ship. This was due to the major losses during the journey. With the trading occurring it created an influx of income the Netherlands. This allowed the Dutch people to have extra spending money.
In the maritime museum there was a whaling exhibit which went through the history of whaling. There were displays of different sizes of whales along with why whaling was important. The whaling industy was popular for the whales oil, which was used to light up homes. The problem burning whale oil is that its sinks when burned. The major decrease in whale population and the discovery of gas brought an end to the whaling industy.
The museum there was more information on navigation, ship building, and the effects it had on the Netherlands. I found that this site really related to the book readings ando offered both instructional and hands on experience.
I couldn't agree with you more! That whale exhibit was awesome! And I'm not just saying that because whales fascinate me, but because it was so interactive! And I really liked how we even got to go inside the whale! How awesome was it seeing that heart beat glow and beat!

ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting on what our tour guide said about what they were taught about slavery in school. They were taught very little on how their own national history was the main cause in the African slave trade with the EITC. While we were taught from a very young age that out national history was a main contributor to the problem
ReplyDeleteI really liked the whale exhibit. I remember our tour guide showing us a painting with some sort of creature coming out of the water that seemed like a mythical creature. She explained this mythical creature was the prediction of what a whale looked like. She noted that there had been much talk about a whale, but no one had really been able to record what it actually looked like!
ReplyDeleteI agree that the whale exhibit was very cool. I liked how the exhibit went through the history of people's interactions with whales from fearing them, to hunting them, and finally working to protect them. I also liked how interactive this exhibit was, overall I felt that this museum went above and beyond to provide information and interactive experiences.
